Energy Saving Myths

“Fluorescent lighting is bad”
Most compact fluorescent light bulbs use up to 75% less energy and last five times longer than a traditional incandescent lighting.

“Installing gaskets around electrical outlets will reduce air leaks”
According to tests conducted by the US Department of Energy, less than 2% of air leakage in a home is through electrical wall outlets. If you’re really looking to reduce air leakage, take a look at your windows! The biggest culprit in letting the air in and out are single pane windows.

“Duct tape is good for sealing ducts”
Research has shown that duct tape has low durability when used to seal ducts.

“If I shut the appliance off, it’s not consuming power”
Most devices continue to draw power even when they’re turned off, some appliances use the same amount of power when they’re off as when it’s on.

“Leaving a ceiling fan on will help cool the room”
Actually, not… The ceiling fax doesn’t cool a room, it cools the person. The temperature in the room is the same with or without a fan. But when the fan circulates the air, and the breeze hits our skin, it feels cooler than the still air. So leaving the fan on while you’re not in the room won’t keep it cool, save energy by turning the fan off when you leave the room.

”Hand washing dishes uses less energy than the dishwasher”
In this case, modern technology beats the old-fashion method. Hand washing dishes uses more hot water than a standard load in the dishwasher. Be even more energy efficient when using your dishwasher, always do a full load but don’t over fill. Most dishwashers don’t require a pre-rinse which could waste up to 20 gallons of water each load! Another tip, when the rinse cycle completes, open the dishwasher door and let the dishes air dry.
